Laptop Charging Port & Power Repair — FAQ

Is it the charger, the port or the battery?

It can be any of the three, and they look alike from the outside. We test the charger, the port, the battery and the charging circuit before replacing anything. Bring the charger you normally use, because it is one of the things we test.

Can a loose charging port be replaced on its own?

It depends on how the laptop is built. On many laptops the charging socket is a separate part on its own cable or small board. On others, including many that charge through USB-C, the port is soldered to the main board. The written estimate says which applies to yours.

My laptop won’t turn on at all. Is that a charging problem?

Sometimes. A dead charger, a failed port or a fully drained battery can all look like a dead laptop, and so can a fault on the main board. The diagnosis tells them apart, and you get a written estimate before any repair.

Is it safe to keep using a charger that sparks or only works at an angle?

No. Unplug it and stop using it. A damaged plug or port can short out and harm the laptop’s power circuit, which turns a small repair into a bigger one. Bring the laptop and the charger in together.

Is a broken charging port covered by warranty?

Standard warranty covers defects, not physical damage such as a port broken by a fall or a tripped-over cable. Lenovo’s Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) usually covers that kind of damage. On a Lenovo laptop we check your coverage for you.

How long does a charging port repair take?

Most common repairs take between an hour and a day when the part is in stock. If it has to be ordered, we give you the expected time with your written estimate, before you approve the repair.

How much does charging port repair cost?

It depends on which part has failed: a new charger costs far less than a repair to the main board. You get a written estimate before any work starts.
