Acer batteries: what the settings and warnings mean

The battery reset pinhole

Many Acer laptops with a built-in battery have a small pinhole on the underside, marked with a battery symbol. Behind it is a button that disconnects the battery for a moment. With the charger unplugged, pressing it with a paperclip for several seconds often revives a laptop that will not turn on or charge. Not every model has one.

Charging that stops at 80%

Acer Care Center has a Battery Charge Limit under Checkup, and AcerSense on newer laptops calls it Optimized Battery Charging. Both stop charging at 80% so the battery lasts longer. A laptop that sits at 80% on the charger is following the setting.

Battery calibration

On models that support it, Acer Care Center can also calibrate the battery — a full charge, a full discharge and a recharge, which takes several hours. It corrects a percentage reading that jumps or drifts. It does not restore a worn battery.

Acer Chromebooks

ChromeOS has a Diagnostics app that shows the battery’s health as a percentage and how many charge cycles it has been through — the quickest way to see whether a Chromebook’s battery is worn.

Acer Battery Replacement — FAQ

Why does my Acer stop charging at 80%?

Usually a setting, not a fault: Acer Care Center, or AcerSense on newer laptops, can cap charging at 80% to extend battery life.

What is the pinhole on the bottom of my Acer?

On many models it is a battery reset button. Pressed with a paperclip, charger unplugged, it can revive a laptop that will not charge or turn on.

Is a swollen battery dangerous?

Yes. Stop charging it and bring it in.

How long does it take?

Most common repairs take between an hour and a day when the battery is in stock. If it has to be ordered, we give you the expected time with your written estimate, before you approve the repair.
