HP batteries: what the warnings mean

“Primary (internal) battery (601)”

HP laptops show this message at startup when the battery’s storage capacity has dropped very low. The laptop still runs on mains power, but the battery is due for replacement.

HP Battery Check

HP Support Assistant includes a Battery Check that rates the battery — for example OK, Calibrate, Weak or Replace. “Calibrate” means the charge reading has drifted, not that the battery has failed.

Testing without Windows

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics runs from the startup menu, before Windows loads, and includes a battery test — useful when the laptop will not boot far enough to check any other way.

Touchpad lifting on slim models

On thin HP laptops such as Spectre and Envy the battery sits under the palm rest. A touchpad that lifts or stops clicking, or a base that no longer sits flat, points to a swollen battery. Stop charging it.

HP Battery Replacement — FAQ

Is it the battery or the charger?

We test both before replacing anything.

Is a swollen battery dangerous?

Yes. Stop charging it and bring it in.

How long does it take?

Most common repairs take between an hour and a day when the battery is in stock. If it has to be ordered, we give you the expected time with your written estimate, before you approve the repair.
