Galaxy Book batteries: what the settings and warnings mean

Charging that stops at 85%

Samsung Settings has a Protect Battery option under Battery and performance. It stops charging at 85%, because a battery held at 100% on the charger wears faster. A Galaxy Book that sits at 85% is following the setting.

Everything charges through USB-C

A Galaxy Book has no separate charging socket: power comes in through a USB-C port. So one that will not charge may have a fault in the battery, the charger, the cable or the port itself, and each has to be ruled out.

Small chargers

A phone charger also fits the USB-C port, but supplies far less power than the laptop’s own charger. It may charge very slowly, only while the laptop is asleep, or not at all. That is the charger, not the battery.

Swelling shows early on a thin base

The battery lies under the palm rest and touchpad, and the base is thin. A touchpad that lifts or stops clicking, or a bottom cover that bows, points to a swollen battery. Stop charging it.

Samsung Laptop Battery Replacement — FAQ

Why does my Galaxy Book stop charging at 85%?

That is the Protect Battery setting in Samsung Settings, not a fault. It limits the charge to 85% to extend battery life; turn it off to reach 100%.

Can I charge my Galaxy Book with a phone charger?

Only slowly, if at all. It charges over USB-C but needs a laptop-strength charger, such as the one it came with.

Can you get Galaxy Book batteries?

It depends on the model. Give us the model number, printed on the underside of the laptop, when you book or call, so we can check the battery before you make the trip.

How long does it take?

Most common repairs take between an hour and a day when the battery is in stock. If it has to be ordered, we give you the expected time with your written estimate, before you approve the repair.
