MacBook batteries: what the warnings mean

“Service Recommended”

macOS shows this under System Settings › Battery › Battery Health when the battery holds noticeably less charge than it did when new, or is not working normally.

Cycle count

Apple rates current MacBook batteries for 1,000 charge cycles. Your count is listed in System Information under Power. A battery well past that figure is usually near the end of its life.

Charging pauses at 80%

A MacBook that holds at 80% is usually using Optimized Battery Charging, a macOS feature that slows battery ageing. That is normal behaviour, not a fault.

Trackpad hard to click

The battery sits directly under the trackpad and palm rest. A trackpad that stops clicking, or a base that rocks on the desk, is often the first sign of a swelling battery. Stop charging it.
