Desktop Power Supply Repair — FAQ

Is it the power supply or the motherboard?

Either can leave a desktop dead or shutting off, and from the outside they look the same. We test the power supply and the board before replacing anything, and the written estimate says which has failed.

My computer smells of burning. What should I do?

Switch it off, unplug it from the wall and don’t turn it on again. Bring it in, and tell us about the smell when you book.

Can you replace the power supply in a Dell, HP or Lenovo office desktop?

Many office desktops use a power supply made for that model rather than a standard one, so the part depends on your computer. Give us the make and model when you book, and the written estimate says which part yours needs.

Will I lose my files?

Tell us when you book if there are files you can’t lose. We can back them up before the repair, as an add-on to the job.

Do you work on custom-built and gaming PCs?

Tell us what is inside it first: a parts list or a photo of the inside is enough. We will say whether it is something we can take on before you bring it in.

How long does it take?

Most common repairs take between an hour and a day when the part is in stock. If it has to be ordered, we give you the expected time with your written estimate, before you approve the repair.

How much does it cost?

It depends on which part has failed: a power supply costs far less than a main board. You get a written estimate before any repair, and no repair starts until you approve it.
